Project Stardust spinal weapons are large hull-mounted systems that make the ship itself part of the aiming mechanism. Community references commonly associate them with capital ships, high pressure, and limited flexibility compared with broad turret arcs. Their challenge is creating a firing line without trapping the hull.

Choose a lane before a target
A stable lane is more valuable than constantly following whichever target is closest to the cursor. Look for long sightlines that intersect enemy movement, objective approaches, or retreat routes. Confirm that the hull has room to turn away and that cover or teammates limit return fire.
Enter the lane early. Large ships often cannot respond to a moving battle as quickly as smaller hulls. If the fight shifts, decide whether the next lane is reachable before committing to a slow rotation.
Do not block another capital ship’s turn. Offset the formation so several firing lines exist without collision.
Select predictable targets
Spinal weapons favor ships whose movement is constrained by size, damage, objective commitment, cover, or pressure from teammates. A small agile target can consume the entire aim window and pull your hull away from a more important lane.
Prioritize exposed high-value ships when the team can follow up. A damaged target approaching cover may be worth a disciplined shot if the alignment already exists. Avoid shooting only for the largest number when another enemy threatens the objective.
Read Fleet Battle value and Deathmatch elimination needs differently. Target priority belongs to the mode, not just the weapon.
Align before the firing window
Begin turning before the target reaches the ideal line. Watch current aim feedback and reduce unnecessary corrections. Oversteering a large hull can move the weapon past the target, leading to another long correction.
Use target direction and map geometry to predict rather than chase. Objectives and cover exits often create predictable movement. Friendly direct pressure can also force a target to turn or hold a line.
If alignment is poor when the window arrives, preserve the shot or cycle when possible. Forcing it can expose the hull and delay a better opportunity.
Plan the recovery
Before firing, identify what the ship will do during reload, charge recovery, or the target’s response. Can it continue with secondary groups, move behind cover, angle away, or remain protected by the team? If no safe recovery exists, the firing position is incomplete.
Avoid pointing so deeply toward the enemy that withdrawal requires a full turn under focus. An angled approach can preserve forward pressure while making the exit shorter.
Keep defensive systems available when missiles or fighter craft are likely to arrive during recovery.
Coordinate with teammates
A spinal hit becomes more useful when allies can finish the target or exploit its forced movement. Call or mark the intended ship when communication allows. Wait for direct pressure, missiles, or objective commitment to reduce the enemy’s options.
Screens and escorts protect the spinal ship from fast flankers, craft, and missiles. In return, the spinal ship should control a lane that matters to them. Do not sit so far back that the formation receives no useful pressure.
Use point defense to understand the protective formation and missiles to coordinate arrival.
Position by map geometry
Open sightlines provide opportunities but expose the ship to multiple enemies. Use distance, allies, and partial cover to reduce incoming lines. Dense structures can create predictable exits but may block the weapon or prevent turning.
On maps with large isolated obstacles, move from one protected angle to another before the enemy controls the gap. Check the whole hull’s clearance, not only the camera view.

Use spinals in each mode
In Deathmatch, aim for finishable or exposed targets and preserve your own elimination value. In Fleet Battle, a high-value target may justify coordination, but do not donate a capital hull for a single attempt.
Attack and Defend can create predictable objective lanes. Attackers can pressure defenders committed to cover; defenders can threaten ships entering an approach. Domination requires the firing lane to influence capture space and rotations.
Always read the live objective. A perfect shot away from the relevant fight may be strategically empty.
Counter spinal weapons
Change angle before entering the firing line, use cover, vary movement where the ship allows it, and pressure during recovery. Small ships should avoid predictable straight travel across an established lane. Large ships should coordinate crossings rather than appearing one at a time.
Force the spinal ship to choose between keeping aim and preserving its hull. A flank or objective rotation can make a static lane irrelevant without directly defeating it.
Do not assume minimum distance is automatically safe; inspect the current ship’s secondary weapons and team support.
Common mistakes
Chasing small targets, rotating after every contact, firing without an exit, sitting beyond objective influence, overcorrecting aim, and ignoring secondary systems are common errors. Another is copying an old exact range from a different ship or version.
If a shot fails, determine whether it was range, alignment, obstruction, target movement, cycle state, or current controls. Change one factor next time.
Practice routine
In one ordinary match, select a lane and attempt only disciplined shots at predictable targets. Record how early alignment began and whether the recovery was safe. In the next match, adjust the initial position rather than changing ships.
Use combat to integrate focus and retreat, and ship stats to compare the spinal hull with alternatives. Mastery means the ship is already aimed where a valuable target must go.
