Project Stardust Combat Guide

Improve Project Stardust combat through engagement envelopes, team focus, weapon timing, map cover, defensive screening, and retreat.

Project Stardust combat is a contest over range, angle, time, and team support. A ship succeeds when its weapons remain useful while the enemy cannot apply its best answer. The current ship panel and battle interface define exact values; good positioning explains how to use them.

Read the objective first

Before choosing a target, identify the mode and current score or objective. Deathmatch values eliminations and survival. Fleet Battle makes ship-value trades important. Attack and Defend concentrates access around destructible objectives. Domination rewards capture presence and rotation.

A fight away from the win condition can produce damage while losing the match. Pick a ship and route that influence what the HUD says matters now.

Use modes when the rules are unfamiliar.

Form with useful allies

Stay close enough for focus fire, screens, defensive overlap, and retreat, but leave enough space for large hulls to turn. Pair vulnerable artillery or carriers with escorts. Give brawlers friendly pressure for their approach.

Watch team distribution at spawn. Reinforce a useful group rather than following the fastest ship into isolation. If a lane is empty, observe safely and report pressure instead of trying to defeat the full flank.

Formation is the foundation of every later weapon decision.

Control the engagement envelope

Use current range and arc feedback to find where your primary weapon works reliably. Identify the distance where the enemy’s strongest response becomes dangerous. Position between those limits when possible.

Cover and teammates widen the envelope. Isolation narrows it. Do not close automatically for a short secondary group if doing so enters the opponent’s ideal pressure.

Spinal weapons need alignment, missiles need a viable timed path, beams need tracking, and carrier craft need manageable travel. The weapons hub covers each delivery problem.

Expose only the required angle

Use cover to remove enemy firing lines while leaving your needed arc open. Consider the full hull and mount placement, not only the camera. A broadside ship may need side exposure; a forward ship may lose output during retreat.

Peek far enough for the primary group, fire or sustain the planned cycle, and return before several enemies align. Do not press against cover so closely that the hull cannot accelerate or turn.

On open maps, use range and friendly pressure as virtual cover.

Focus targets the team can finish

Select damaged, isolated, objective-critical, or already-focused enemies. Removing one ship reduces incoming pressure; spreading damage across several retreating targets may remove none.

Mark or communicate focus when possible. Coordinate missile arrival, direct fire, fighters, and spinal shots. Switch when the target reaches strong cover and another becomes achievable.

Stop a chase when allies disengage or the enemy formation turns toward you. Preserving your ship protects the next objective cycle.

Time weapon cycles

Do not fire every system merely because it is ready. A direct cycle can occupy defenses before missiles arrive. Point-defense or dual-purpose systems may need to remain ready. A spinal shot may deserve a predictable target rather than the nearest one.

Observe the recovery period. Decide whether the ship can maintain secondary pressure, use cover, turn out, or rely on screens. The attack plan is incomplete without a recovery.

Current feedback is more useful than old exact ranges or reloads.

Protect against missiles and craft

Stay near useful point-defense overlap without stacking. Watch incoming direction and move toward friendly coverage. Preserve defensive attention when a coordinated wave arrives.

Carriers and escorts should coordinate current guard, escort, or intercept functions where available. Do not chase one craft away from the hull or objective you were meant to protect.

Point defense reduces threats but does not guarantee immunity. Read point defense for positioning.

Retreat early

Set a trigger before contact: shields depleted, multiple hostile indicators, key weapons damaged, fighter wings exhausted, cover lost, or allies leaving. Waiting for critical health makes large-hull turning and acceleration too late.

Move toward the prepared exit while some pressure remains available. Avoid crossing friendly paths. Once safe, reassess instead of immediately returning through the same lane.

A retreat is successful when the ship contributes again, not merely when it survives far from the battle.

Counter common roles

Against brawlers, deny the protected approach and preserve distance. Against artillery or spinals, change angle, use cover, and pressure recovery. Against carriers, challenge exposed hull positions or reduce craft value with screening rather than chasing across the map.

Against shield-focused ships, sustain or repeat pressure so recovery is difficult, then avoid overextending for the finish. Against durable hulls, coordinate focus instead of feeding individual attacks.

Read ship classes for role behavior rather than lore-based assumptions.

Diagnose a lost fight

Find the first failure: wrong objective, isolated formation, unusable range, blocked arc, poor target, mistimed volley, lost defensive coverage, or late retreat. The final damage exchange is often only the consequence.

Keep the ship and one learning goal constant for several matches. Change the opening position or retreat timing before abandoning the branch.

If current behavior differs from an old guide, capture the ship panel, mode, map, and date and check updates.

Combat loop

Read the objective, form, select a supported lane, enter the envelope, expose the required angle, focus a useful target, coordinate cycles, and leave at the preset trigger. Reset, then repeat.

Use maps to refine the lane and ship stats to translate a new hull. Combat becomes consistent when every attack includes the position that makes it work and the route that keeps the ship alive afterward.
